Merrick's not so million dollar smile

Now that we have gotten Miley's mouth all fixed up, it was Merrick's turn. Merrick got 2 teeth pulled at the dentist's office a few months ago and about died emotionally from it. It was so bad that when we went back to get his next work done (it was supposed to take four trips to get him fixed up) the dentist pulled me in and said he was so traumatized that there was no way to do the work in the office. So, we left and scheduled the O.R. option for him at the Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Unlucky for us, Michael was out of town on the weekend of Merrick's surgery. Luckily Emily let Miley spend the night with Lainey, which Miley thought was awesome. It was her first sleep over and then she got to go to preschool with Lainey. She had so much fun. I was greatful not to have to worry about her since the hospital throws a fit about siblings being there. I dropped Madelyn off at our carpool buddies house at about 6am. I am thankful for them also as they gladly took her that early and fed her and got her to school.

Then we were off to the hospital. The guard and the dentist office gave me bad directions and we walked to three different buildings and three parking garages before we ended up back at the place where I thought we were to sign in in the first place. Now, we were just about 45 minutes late.

They took us back and it was a totally different experience with Merrick than Miley. Merrick first was angry and mean. He hit himself and at me which he does normally. Then they gave him the meds to make him loopy (VERSA). He just got calm. He didn't act silly like Miley or anything. He just sat and watched a cartoon on the t.v. in the room. We met the doctors and nurses and they took him back. Halfway through the dentist came out and gave me the bad news, though.

There is always a chance that things will change in getting in there for dental surgery. It had been a few months since his last x-rays and I told them to do whatever would be best for Merrick and so that we wouldn't be back in this position in a year or two. He had cavities on his front bottom four teeth. She said he would lose the front bottom teeth within 6 months anyway, so they pulled them. Then, the teeth under those two front teeth are so crooked that she said the next teeth to the sides of the front two bottom teeth needed to come out so that they wouldn't have to pull them as the new teeth grow in crooked.

They had already pulled two teeth on his bottom left side previously. They they gave him some crowns and pulled three other teeth. Altogether, he lost 7 teeth that day and nine total. (I will say that he was in Heaven when he saw that they tooth fairy left him $7 the next morning). Poor boy came out with three teeth on the bottom. It's pretty sad looking. Luckily he has his front top teeth and so he doens't look completely terrible. He looks like a vampire now.

When Miley came out of her sedation she was histerical. I was expecting the same thing with more violence from Merrick. He TOTALLY surprised me. He was perfect when I went back to see him. He was being so good. I couldn't believe it. He took pain medicine one day when he went to school so that he wouldn't need any while he was away from home (on Monday - his surgery was Friday). He did awesome.

Now I just hope that my kiddos understand that they are not starting with good teeth genes and they have got to stay on top of taking care of them.

It's still a daily fight for me.
Michael had a long morning of waiting. Love those blue eyes.
Merrick in one of the waiting areas.

He was so worried because he didn't know what was going to happen. Now, he loves going to the hospital to have his teeth done.

This is a sculpture in the kids hospital. It is made up of a ton of litle kid toys and looks like a coyote. It's really neat.
He scratched  a scab off his head in the waiting room and his poor head started bleeding. Luckily he took a nap because he was way more mobile this trip than 3 months earlier during Miley's procedure.

This is Merrick when he gets really upset. He can be a beast.
A happier Merrick waiting to go to surgery.
